Chaucer/Troilus and Criseyde
[ send me this paper ]
A 3 page essay that examines Geoffrey Chaucer's Troilus and Criseyde, which can be regarded as a study on the nature of courtly love. Having set up the narrative of the two lovers as a prime example of courtly love in books 1 through 3, the betrayal of Troilus, a Trojan prince, by his beloved lady, the fair Criseyde, must have come as something of a shock to Chaucer's medieval audience. However, Chaucer prepares the reader for this outcome by meticulously describing the seduction tactics to which she is subjected by the handsome Greek soldier, Diomede. Chaucer's portrayal of Diomede is crucial to the believability of Criseyde's actions and subsequent betrayal. No additional sources cited.

Chaucer: Compassionate towards Human Frailty?
[ send me this paper ]
5 pages in length. The question we shall seek to answer herein is whether Chaucer was tolerant of human frailty. By examining several of his works in general, it is easy to see that Chaucer not only was not tolerant of human shortcomings, but he actually preyed upon them, making light of them in his works. He played up the image of man as a bumbling fool, and the tragedy and trouble that many took upon himself foolishly. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

Christianity in Beowulf
[ send me this paper ]
A 6 page research paper/essay that discusses Christian symbols in the epic poem Beowulf. This poem has its origins in pagan culture, but it was recorded by a Christian scribe (Saupe 97). Therefore there are “overlays” that color the narrative with Christian religious meaning (Saupe 97). This examination of the Christian overlay of meaning in Beowulf attempts to discern if this Christian influence changes in the descriptions of Beowulf’s three quests, or remains uniform throughout. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

Christopher Marlowe’s “Doctor Faustus” and the Universal Truth he Presents
[ send me this paper ]
This 4 page report discusses a story of a man who was fundamentally doomed to eternal damnation because of his deal, signed in blood, with the devil. If one accepts the premise of Aristotle that a tragic hero is a person of stature who has a critical weakness that leads to his downfall but that downfall results in his suffering and final understanding or wisdom, then one cannot help but see Faustus as a tragic character. This report addresses that fact and then discusses what Marlowe’s goal was in presenting this story. No sources listed.

Cicero/The Republic and The Laws
[ send me this paper ]
A 7 page book review that addresses Cicero's The Republic and The Laws. Cicero's The Republic can be viewed as the "culmination of pagan thinking" regarding political theory and, specifically, the organization of the Roman state (Powell x). Then, in its sequel, The Laws, Cicero expounds on the doctrine of Natural Law, setting out an ideal legal code for his vision of a reformed Roman Republic. Collectively, these two books, which have been combined into one text in the volume to be reviewed, present the philosophical culmination of Rome's greatest political philosopher and statesman. Examination of these texts reveals why the works of Cicero have been influential throughout history and remain relevant today. No additional sources cited.

Cinderella Stories

Filename: RAell2.rtf

Cinderella: Text and Film

A 6 page paper which compares and contrasts the Cinderella story with the Disney cartoon film version. Bibliography lists 2 sources.
Filename: RAcinder.rtf

Classical and Literary Traditions in Literary Criticism
[ send me this paper ]
This 10 page report discusses the fact that even though the classical and the romantic traditions of criticism in literature both deal with literature, each views it from entirely different perspectives. In the “classical” tradition of literature the primary issue is one in which the definition of the work is stated through what has been determined throughout the history of Western literature as the framework in which a literary work appropriately exists. In comparison, the assumption that sensation must surely be preferable to thinking serves as an example of the ways in which the Romantics elevated emotion over reason, and what they perceived to be the true nature of life rather than that constructed by humanity. Bibliography lists 5 sources.
